REST AND RECOVERY…

Hi Trippers,

I know it’s been a few days since I last posted.

6646-rest-areaAnd for those of you who hang on my every bad pun, inane pop culture reference or self-deprecating comment, you must have gone through a tad bit of withdrawal. Sorry about that.

And where have I been?

Simple. I’ve been visiting the land of “rest and recovery,” a quaint little place where you kick back and go “ahhhhhh.”

Since last Sunday’s LA Marathon (or “Sauna-thon” given the really high temps), I’ve been trying to take it easy. Read the rest of this entry

LOS ANGELES MARATHON… A BUSY WEEKEND!

Hi Trippers,

LA Marathon weekend!

Normally I give prologues/teases to the races I run, but this weekend was a bit extra crazy.

Why?

Well, it was also my B-day this weekend. So I’m just catching up now that the race is done and I’m an older/hopefully wiser individual.

So please forgive me if I give a little weekend wrap-up smushed all together here.

And please let slide any extra grammar slip-ups. I’m really tired. Read the rest of this entry

“I’M RUNNING FOR…”

Hi Trippers!

As the LA Marathon draws ever closer (Sunday is M-Day), my mind is already “racing.”

The LA Marathon turns 30!

The LA Marathon celebrates 30 sweaty years!

Racing with thoughts about things like:

  • Race strategy
  • Weather (gonna be hot)
  • Hydration/nutrition
  • Getting enough rest beforehand
  • Final fundraising
  • Gear prep (yup, some stuff is already laid out)
  • Transportation/parking
  • How I’m going to reward myself afterward (it is the day after my B-day after all)

And about a million other little details.

I’m sure most of the 24,999 other LA Marathon participants are similarly pondering. We runners tend to be an OCD bunch. Read the rest of this entry

I LOVE LA (MARATHON)…

Hi Trippers!

Nobody walks in LA!

Nobody walks in LA!

This Sunday myself and 24,999 other runners will line up for the 30th Anniversary Los Angeles Marathon.

Say what you will about the “City of Angels”: stupid bad traffic, crazy real estate prices, the insanity that is the “biz”, earthquakes, smog, etc…

But when it comes to putting on a marathon, singer Randy Newman got it right. “I love LA!” Read the rest of this entry

MY GOLDEN MARATHON

How many of you remember your “golden birthday”?

Golden

I plan to be forever 5 inside.

Of course, some of you are now thinking: “What the heck is a golden birthday”?

For those unfortunate souls not in the know, a golden birthday is when your age equals the day of the month in which your were born.

For example, my niece Samantha was born on September 11th (I know, the modern day equivalent to being born on Dec. 7th). Anyway, her golden birthday was her 11th birthday.

I was born on March 14th, 1969, so mine was back in 1983 when I turned 14 (that would be the same year that Return of the Jedi hit theaters).

And for those of you wondering who else was born on March 14th:

  • Billy Crystal
  • Michael Caine
  • Quincy Jones
  • and good ole Albert Einstein

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Hi Trippers,

Next Sunday I will run the LA Marathon for the 6th time, pounding 26.2 miles of pavement from Dodger Stadium to the Pacific Ocean.

It will also mark the 6th time I’ve run the race as a member of the Team To End AIDS (T2) charity running group.

The 2015 T2 LA Marathon Running Team.

The 2015 T2 LA Marathon Running Team.

Simply put, T2 and their fantastic coaches and support staff helped turn this former couch potato into a marathon runner. I will forever be grateful to them. Read the rest of this entry

BEHOLD OUR eBIB WINNERS…

Hi Trippers!

Check out the three winners of our eBibs 2.0 contest in their “cartoonized” glory.

And how better to show them off then in a group eBib (and yes, I’m eBib photobombing them):

Congrats again guys.

And if you want to get yourself “cartoonized” be sure to check out ilovetorun.org and have your own caricature done.

Get drawn… and Run on!

HANG UP THE PHONE PLEASE…

It’s a soapbox kind of day. Think of it as another “What Grinds my Gears” posts.

Robert Preston says "hang it the hell up."

Robert Preston says “hang it the hell up.”

To put it simply, we’ve got trouble everyone.

Right here in River City. Trouble with a capital “T” and that rhymes with “P” and that stands for “phone.”

(Yup, that’d be a MUSIC MAN reference).

Most states have enacted policies regarding texting and driving or talking on cellphones and driving. For whatever reason, people can’t seem to put their phones down when they get behind the wheel. Therefore the government has stepped in and made it illegal. “Distracted driving” is indeed bad.

I’m here wondering if that scope shouldn’t be broadened to include gyms. Read the rest of this entry

CELEBRATING 300!

Woo hoo!

Woo hoo!

What do you think of when you see the number “300“?

Well, if you’re a bowling aficionado, you think of a perfect game. Yup, toss 12 strikes in a row and you achieve bowling’s holy grail.

Homer Simpson did it once… then again, what hasn’t Homer Simpson done?

What if bowling isn’t your game and you’re more of a movie nut.

Well, then 300 conjures up slo-motion images of chiseled Spartans laying waste to waves of Xerxes’ forces trying to storm the Hot Gates. Read the rest of this entry

LACING ‘EM UP FOR LACEUP SERIES

Hey Trippers!

Double knot 'em and run!

Double knot ’em and run!

Good news this past week as I was among those chosen to be an ambassador to the 2015 Lexus LaceUp Running Series.

For those of you not in the know, LaceUp ran its inaugural series in 2014 and they’re back this year with a quartet of SoCal races.

  • Ventura– October 24th
  • Palos Verdes– November 14th
  • Riverside– December 6th
  • Orange County– Date TBD

Each of the races features scenic courses and offers runners the option of pounding the pavement for a half marathon, 10K or 5K. Read the rest of this entry

POUNDING PLANETARY PAVEMENT…

Hi Trippers!

Red rover, red rover... let your rover come over.

Red rover, red rover… let your rover come over.

Just a quick post today as I’m knee-deep working on a script (don’t you hate it when that day job intrudes on your running banter).

Actually, it’s really a repost. I saw a cute article at Runner’sWorld.com about the Martian rover Opportunity.

When the rover touched down on our nearest planetary neighbor in 2004, it had a projected mission duration (aka “life expectancy”) of 93 days. And it was only supposed to travel about 600 meters. Read the rest of this entry

Winners: eBibs 2.0

Hi Trippers,

The bibs are up and the eBibs 2.0 contest has ended.

Thanks for ilovetorun.org for sponsoring the contest.

And a big round of thanks to everyone who entered… some really great eBibs. I wish I could give every one of you awards; it was really tough to decide.

But with very little further ado… ado ado ado ado.

Okay, that’s enough ado.  Here are the winners:

NO MOUSE IN THE HOUSE…

That's one expensive mouse.

That’s one expensive mouse.

Today I did something by doing nothing. Sounds zen, right?

Nothing quite so grand, I assure you.

Let’s just say that today I reallocated my running resources.

I decided not to run a race in order to run a race. Huh?

To put it bluntly, I said “no” to Mickey Mouse. It was hard, trust me.

Today marked the sign-up for the 10th annual Disneyland Half Marathon (September 6th). And I didn’t register. Read the rest of this entry

CONTEST: eBIBS 2.0

Hi Everyone,

Cartoon running!

Cartoon running!

About a year ago, I first showed off the cartoon version of my running mugshot… remember this?

Yup, my caricature was courtesy of the gang at ilovetorun.org. They had introduced the glory that is the “eBib.” Think of it as an ecard specially designed for runners. It was simple:

  1. Go to  I<3torun.org and their “create” eBib page.
  2. Choose a character (or pick my cartoonized face if you so choose).
  3. Select a simple color background for your bib.
  4. Jot down a motivational/funny/cute saying.
  5. And bask in the fun results, like below:
eBibs featuring... you!

eBibs featuring… you!

You could then e-mail your eBib or post it on a plethora of social media sites.

Easy, right?

Well, the eBib caught on and literally thousands of them have been created so far. Read the rest of this entry
