SUMMER SNIPPET #1: “I STAND CORRECTED… SORT OF.”

I’ll start my “Summer Snippets” with a bit of an epilogue.

What are you doing Dec. 18th?

What are you doing Dec. 18th?

My last pre-MIA post back in June was about me opting not to sign up for the 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon due to a lack of a Disney deferral policy (due to the strong possibility of a trip to Oz with Lindy that would necessitate me skipping the race).

Well, after I posted my article I received several responses from readers (you guys are a sharp and good-looking bunch, have I told you that) pointing out that Disney does deferrals.

So I dug deep into the Run Disney website. Lo and behold, the House of Mouse running division does have a deferral policy. Read the rest of this entry

A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE…

“Always in motion is the future.”  -Yoda

Last year around this time, Disney opened up registration for the inaugural running of the Star Wars Half Marathon.

This padawan will be MIA.

This padawan will be MIA.

It was perhaps the ultimate “combo” for me (even better than that Reese’s chocolate/peanut butter hybrid)… fusing my love of marathon running with the geek awesomeness that comes from that galaxy far far away.

I signed up faster than you can say “But I was going to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters.”

Go ahead, say it. You know you want to. Oh, and be sure to give it that Tatooine farmboy whine.

And the race certainly did not disappoint. The atmosphere was electric and the runners’ costumes fantastic.

I made my personal trench run and brought home a Chewie tech shirt and a replica of the medal handed out when Luke destroyed the first Death Star. Talk about geeky nirvana. Read the rest of this entry

NO MOUSE IN THE HOUSE…

That's one expensive mouse.

That’s one expensive mouse.

Today I did something by doing nothing. Sounds zen, right?

Nothing quite so grand, I assure you.

Let’s just say that today I reallocated my running resources.

I decided not to run a race in order to run a race. Huh?

To put it bluntly, I said “no” to Mickey Mouse. It was hard, trust me.

Today marked the sign-up for the 10th annual Disneyland Half Marathon (September 6th). And I didn’t register. Read the rest of this entry

CERTIFIABLE… AND HERE’S THE “PROOF”

Hi Trippers!

So just a final bit of leftover fun from last week’s Star Wars Half Marathon. After clicking on the RunDisney website I discovered that I’m “certifiable”… as in I have certificates. And some other goodies.

First off, here’s my stats from the race:

REVIEW: THE STAR WARS HALF MARATHON

Disney-ized Darth and company.

Disney-ized Darth and company.

RACE: Star Wars Half Marathon

DATE: January 18, 2015

LOCATION: Anaheim, CA

DISTANCES: Half Marathon/10K/5K/Kids Run

START TIME: 5:30am

WEATHER AT START: 52° and mostly sunny.

FINISHERS: 10374 Half Marathon (Sunday)/ 9195 10K (Saturday)

A long time ago (okay, it was early Sunday morning) in a galaxy far far away (aka Anaheim)…

Half marathon runners were out in full “force” (sorry, been stuck on Star Wars puns all week) for the inaugural running of the Star Wars Half Marathon. When you combine my childhood obsession with Star Wars (I had every Star Wars toy, including Star Wars bed sheets) and my adult obsession of distance running into one event you get something that excites both the big kid and the eternal 8-year-old inside me.

THE STAR WARS HALF MARATHON: POST MORTEM

Hi Everyone,

A fun time running the Star Wars Half Marathon yesterday.

Still sporting the remnants of a cold and vacation hangover, I knew I wasn’t 100% for this race. So instead of pushing things too hard, I just took my time and enjoyed the scenery. I even stopped for a Disney Photo or two on the course (not the norm for me). And a rock in the shoe had to be addressed, slowing me down a tad more.

Still, in the end I posted a Disney-best time for me and also ran a “negative split” (the sign of proper race management.

And here’s a few photos from the weekend:

Next race up is the Surf City Half Marathon in two weeks. Looking forward to adding a third “surfboard medal” to my collection.

Have a good day… and Run on!

STAR WARS HALF MARATHON review to be posted tomorrow morning.

THINGS TO BE OVERHEARD AT THE STAR WARS HALF MARATHON…

Hi everyone,

Get your Kessel Run on!

Get your Kessel Run on!

This weekend marks the inaugural running of the Star Wars Half Marathon in California. And if you’re like me, you spent large chunks of your childhood quoting lines from Luke Skywalker & Company.

I’ve already heard some fun Star Wars running puns like: “May the course be with you.”

So I’ve decided to add a few of my own.

Enjoy!

“No way in hell I’m letting the wookie win.”

“I find your lack of faith and chafed nipples disturbing.” Read the rest of this entry

BACK TO IT!

Hey Everyone,

Hail hail, the gang's all here. "Team Roadkill" posing for our weekly selfie.

Hail hail, the gang’s all here. “Team Roadkill” posing for our weekly selfie.

So my three week holiday/vacation/workfest reached its end and I’m finally back in Los Angeles (Lindy gets back tonight).

Needless to say my first few days back in town have been a blur. Friday was spent just getting my bearings. I had to deal with three weeks of accumulated mail/bills, oodles of unanswered e-mails, laundry, cleaning and taking down my Christmas decorations.

On Saturday I did my first run with my T2 gang in four weeks. Now while I did do some running on vacation, I was a little lax and I need to get back into the running swing of things. Oh, and battling a cold and some leftover jetlag didn’t make things any easier. Fortunately, we had just an 8-mile recovery run.

Next Sunday, I’ve got my first race of the year: The Star Wars Half Marathon down at Disneyland. It’s going to be a fun time and this padawan is looking forward to pounding some pavement in a galaxy far far away. Read the rest of this entry

THREE FOR TUESDAY…

Hi Trippers!

Is that a "compliment sandwich" or a Cuban?

Is that a “compliment sandwich” or a Cuban?

Rather than one lengthy post, just a few miscellaneous tidbits to share today.

And it’s a running version of the “compliment sandwich” where you put two good things around a bad in the hopes that it goes down better.

So let the “bitting of tids” commence:

TIDBIT #1- Start with the good

This weekend I got a package in the mail that I’ve been waiting on.

Look, I've got a star on the Walk of Fame.

Look, I’ve got a star on the Walk of Fame.

And no it’s not the June delivery for the “fruit of the month club” (which I believe would have been kiwi fruit… which I still think look like soft baby coconuts). Nope, inside a big ole box was the mile marker sign from the Hollywood Half Marathon. If you remember, I mentioned that the HHM ran a contest to have each mile of the race “presented” by one of the runners… and lo and behold my moniker graced Mile 5.

Ken and Sabrina Nwadike (and the gang at Superhero Events) saw to it that the sign made its way to me. A great memento from a fun race. Now I just need to find me a shadow box and some free wall space.

TIDBIT #2- Add a slab of bad

After a week of babying my injured left leg following the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, I finally went to the gym this morning to see how things felt. Unfortunately, the report was not 100% A-OK. I loosened up fine on the treadmill, but things weren’t so good on the elliptical. After about ten minutes, I could still feel some tightness in the back of my left leg. Rather than risk it, I cut my workout short and headed home. While I’m not thrilled that it’s still bugging me, I’ve got time to let it heal as my next race isn’t for almost 4 weeks and it’s a 10K. I should hopefully be right as rain by then.

TIDBIT #3- End with some more good

Light 'em up!

Light ’em up!

The force is strong with this one. Yup, get ready for months of bad Star Wars puns as I’ve officially joined the rebellion and signed up for the Disney Star Wars Half Marathon. I’m thrilled that I’ll be running the race with a whole bunch of my Team to End AIDS (T2) friends… or should I say my fellow jedi knights. And I will dress up in some fashion for the race. So if you know of a place where I can get some running jedi robes wholesale (complete with purple “bad mofo” lightsaber) or dri-fit Stormtrooper armor, give me a shout.

I’ve got a “good” feeling about this… and Run on!
