SUMMER SNIPPET #1: “I STAND CORRECTED… SORT OF.”
I’ll start my “Summer Snippets” with a bit of an epilogue.
My last pre-MIA post back in June was about me opting not to sign up for the 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon due to a lack of a Disney deferral policy (due to the strong possibility of a trip to Oz with Lindy that would necessitate me skipping the race).
Well, after I posted my article I received several responses from readers (you guys are a sharp and good-looking bunch, have I told you that) pointing out that Disney does deferrals.
So I dug deep into the Run Disney website. Lo and behold, the House of Mouse running division does have a deferral policy.
My wrong. My bad.
Kinda.
I’d point out the Disney deferral policy to you, but I’m having trouble even now finding it to post a link. So instead, I’ll point you to a link to a general story about deferrals from the book “MAGICAL MILES: THE RUNNER’S GUIDE TO WALT DISNEY WORLD.”
Basically, Disney does have a deferral program, BUT with one big wrinkle… they limit the number of deferrals and can stop it without warning at any time.
Oh, and no one at Run Disney could tell me the magic number of deferrals allowed.
So basically, you may or may not be able to defer depending on when you decide.
To me that sounds a little like trying to book a flight using frequent flier miles… just a tad bit too random.
So rather than play a game of “Deferral Roulette” with my $200+ dollars, I decided to stick to my guns (or “blasters” as it is Star Wars after all) and pass on registering. The race has since sold out (as we all knew it would).
But again the point is most likely moot as I’m hoping to be spending that particular weekend with Lindy in Australia… drinking Fosters, throwing boomerangs at koalas and hanging with crocodile Dundee and Men at Work (feel free to add any other Oz stereotypes).
And if work or some other circumstance has me in LA that particular weekend in January, I’ll still be running with T2 as I train for the 2016 LA Marathon.
And maybe I’ll take some of those $200 I saved and use it to go see STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS again (which opens Dec. 18th). Hell, with $200 I might even be able to afford some popcorn at the theater.
Probably just a small size.
Add butter flavoring… and Run on!

That deferral policy is so lame. If that’s how it’s going to be, why even bother having one at all?
It sounds like you made the right decision. Maybe you could even find a race down under to run. I’m sure Star Wars will still be there in future years!
Thanks for the note. It does seem to be a bit of wishy-washy policy. To quote Yoda, “Do or do not…” And I would like to do a race in Oz one day (I could make all sorts of “you run on the wrong side of the road” jokes).
