FAST FACT: THE MAN WHO REFUSES TO BE BEATEN

Some people don’t like to wear water belts when they run because they feel it will “weigh them down.” Just tell that to Lloyd Scott.

Here’s the latest “Fast Fact” that’s sure to make you smile.*

*NOTE: You can read more about Lloyd Scott’s race costumes and running adventures at his website: http://www.lloydscott.co.uk/

Run on Lloyd!

HUMP DAY TIDBITS

Fun with made-up words!

Fun with made-up words!

Hi Trippers!

Just a quick pair of tidbits today keeping you “informated*.”

*NOTE: Okay, I know that “informated” isn’t a word, but rather a typo I just made. But doesn’t it look like it should be a word?

Okay, sometimes my brain gets way ahead of my fingers (not that I’m the greatest typist to begin with… I’m fast, but not accurate) and I come up with some wonderful typos that can confound even smartest of spellcheck programs. So in honor of my fingers having a mind of their own, I’m going to keep that word and use it occasionally. How’s this for a definition?

Informated (verb): to haphazardly impart one’s supposed knowledge to others in the hopes of broadening their understanding on a topic or at least making them smile over use of such a silly word.

“I informated to everyone that while ketchup is a wonderful condiment, mustard should be used in its place on hot dogs as a gesture of goodwill.”

FAST FACT: FAST VS. NOT SO MUCH…

Ever wonder which race on average has the fastest overall field and which has the slowest?*

Here’s the latest “Fast Fact” to rattle around your noggin.

*NOTE: The stat is based on races with at least 2,000 finishers. And since 4 of the 5 “slowest” half marathons on the list are Disney races, you have to figure that the median time is more than a little impacted by runners/walkers stopping to take pictures with Disney characters. Say “cheese” Mickey!

CONTEST: “RACE IN MY PLACE”

Run The Rockies.

Run The Rockies.

Who wants to run a “mile high” marathon (or half marathon) in the “Mile High City”?

For FREE!

That’s right, my scheduling conflict is your benefit. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to run the REVEL Rockies Marathon/Half Marathon on August 17th in Denver, Colorado.

So I want you to run it in my place.

The great people at the REVEL Race Series are allowing me to give my entry to the REVEL Rockies race to one lucky Tripping The Kenyans reader.

And this is one cool race.

OH BABY!

Me in my pre-Tripping The Kenyans days... rocking the froggy!

Me in my pre-Tripping The Kenyans days… rocking the froggy!

Babies are cute.

Like really cute.

Messy, but really really cute.

I always tell people the reason babies are so cute is that they use this cuteness to trick you into taking them out of the hospital. And like driving a new car off of the lot, once you leave the premises… no returns.

Now as my friends know (and my mother bemoans), I am unmarried and don’t have any kids of my own. I’m a pretty damn cool uncle if I do say so myself… I am saying so; if you ask my nieces, they’ll probably tell you I’m weird.

Cool uncle-ness aside, why am I talking about babies?

And especially why I am I talking about babies in a running blog? What could babies and runners possibly have in common? Last I checked, those little guys and girls can’t stand up yet, let alone run races.

SPENDING THE NIGHT AT SEA… KINDA

Historical... and haunted.

Historical… and haunted.

Thursday night Lindy and I spent the night onboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. For those of you who don’t know, not only is this grand lady of the seas a cool museum, but it’s also a floating hotel.

You can check out the Queen Mary website: Click here

The Queen Mary was a beautiful ship in her heyday, but that day of hey is forever frozen around 1967. So, we did have to temper our expectations a little when it came to accommodations.

“REVEL” JOINING A TEAM

Speedy and striking!

Speedy and striking!

Q: What’s better than running a half marathon or marathon?

A: How about running a half marathon or marathon that features a “fast as hell” downhill course? And how about a “scenic” fast as hell downhill course?

Q: What’s better than that?

A: Saving some money (aka cash, dough, coinage) while running a scenic, fast as hell, downhill half marathon or marathon.

Q: How much money?

A: How’s $10 grab you? Or better yet, how about a chance to run for FREE?

First things first.

Last week I was named one of the Revel Race Series ambassadors and it’s time to get the ball rolling… downhill.

Click on the image below to learn more about the REVEL Race Series and its trio of races (REVEL Rockies, REVEL Big Cottonwood and REVEL Canyon City).

I’ve just created team “Tripping The Kenyans” for both the REVEL Big Cottonwood and REVEL Canyon City races and here’s you chance to sign up for a team too.

Why join a team?

By signing up for a team, you can save $5 off of the price of registration. And coupled with the additional $5 Facebook discount available during checkout, you can save up to a total of $10 (pretty sweet).

And be sure to sign up before August 1st to beat the price increase on the REVEL Canyon City race.

And it’s worth noting that the REVEL Race Series does NOT have any of those annoying registration/convenience/nonsense fees that many other races tack on to hide additional costs.

And there’s additional team benefits:

  • Teams get a professional group photo taken at the race
  • Teams with 12+ members get tent space at the finish line
  • Teams are eligible to win a prize for the lowest average time in each race distance

So talk to your friends/running group and see about starting up your own team (and coming up with a cool name).

And you’re also all invited to join team Tripping The Kenyans (and can save up to $10 immediately). Just click on the links below:

Team Tripping The Kenyans- REVEL Big Cottonwood (Sep. 13th)

or

Team Tripping The Kenyans- REVEL Canyon City (Nov. 15th)

YOU SAID SOMETHING ABOUT RUNNING FOR FREE?

Yes, I did.

In addition to offering team discounts, I wanted to let you know in the upcoming days/weeks I’ll be running contests to give out a FREE registration for each of the three REVEL races.

And the first contest starts on Monday, August 4th. So be sure to check in and see about running a marathon “gratis.”

Join a team, save some cash… and Run on!

CONTEST: “KEEPIN’ KOOL” (DAY 3)

Spray and Run on!

Here’s the results of yesterday’s Trivia Question:

And the winner of a 4oz bottle of Kool ‘n Fit Sport spray is: LEE SCOLARO

Congratulations!

CONTEST: “KEEPIN’ KOOL” (DAY 1)

Kool 'n Fit

Kool ‘n Fit

Time for another fun giveaway from Tripping The Kenyans. But this contest is a little different as you have not one, but five chances to win this week.

More on that in a quick bit. First off, let’s talk about what’s up for grabs.

Let’s talk Kool ‘n Fit.

Click here to check out their website.

Or here to visit their Facebook page.

Kool ‘n Fit Sport is an all-natural performance spray designed to be used before, during or after a workout (FYI, Kool ‘n Fit has multiple types of sprays/oils). It acts as a “vasodilator,” which is a fancy way of saying it increases blood flow (and no, it doesn’t attract vampires).

IT’S ON LIKE COMIC-CON…

Bring on the Con!

Bring on the Con!

Hi Trippers,

When I hopped onto the train for San Diego ComicCon on Wednesday morning, I figured I’d be putting up a daily post talking in-depth about the con, the panels I saw, the parties at which I partied (and crashed) and the runs I managed to squeeze in during the downtime.

Best laid plans of mice and men… and all that jazz.

Let’s just say, things have been a whirlwind down here… or should I say a “Sharknado”?

I’ve pretty much been incommunicado with the outside world since I hit San Diego, so I figured I’d just share a few photos with you and let them sum up my trip so far.

Enjoy…

…and the craziness continues.

Have a great weekend and I’ll be in touch after I decompress back in LA.

To quote comic legend Stan Lee “Excelsior”… and Run on!

“REVEL” IN BEING AN AMBASSADOR…

One of my favorite TV Shows, “Futurama,” often began episodes with quirky professor Hubert J. Farnsworth” walking into the conference room at Planet Express spouting his catchphrase: “Good news everybody.”

So, let me follow suit… “Good News Everybody.”

I’m finally able to officially announce that I’ve been chosen as one of the “Ambassadors” to the Revel Race Series (check it out by clicking here).

Like Shirley Temple Black, Henry Kissinger and the “older version” of Mr. Spock, each of us 14 Ambassadors gets to spread the word… about this cool series of races.
