TRAINING TUNES: “MY SONGS KNOW WHAT YOU DID IN THE DARK (LIGHT EM UP)”
SONG: “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)”
GROUP: Fall Out Boy
ALBUM: “Save Rock and Roll” (Released 2013)
BACKGROUND:
When other runners ask me what group do I listen to most when I hit the road, one band instantly comes to mind- “Fall Out Boy.” In fact, I’ve had at least one, if not several, Fall Out Boy songs on every single race mix I’ve ever created.
They are my “go to” group for running music, hands down.
This Chicago suburb based “pop punk” band formed in 2001, drawing heavy inspiration from the local hardcore punk scene. Building steam with their first album “Take This To Your Grave,” the band really took off with their sophomore effort “From Under the Cork Tree.” Two singles from the album “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Dance Dance” both cracked the Billboard Top 10 and gained Fall Out Boy national notoriety.
On a side note, the first song I ever heard from Fall Out Boy was “Dance, Dance” which was included as background music on one of the Madden football XBox games.
Fall Out Boy followed up their multi-platinum “Cork” album with “Infinity on High,” which debuted at #1 on the US album charts and spawned several successful singles (some great running tunes on there). Their next effort, 2008’s “Folie a Deux,” received positive critical response, but didn’t fare as well on the charts.
Following “Folie,” Fall Out Boy took a few year hiatus during which the band members worked on side projects and enjoyed some time off from their busy tour schedule. They jumped back onto the music scene in 2013 with the release of their fifth studio album “Save Rock and Roll,” which has spawned the hit singles “The Phoenix” and “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).”
What makes Fall Out Boy such a good band to run to?
Aside from their great (and lengthy) song titles, Fall Out Boy has some hard pounding and driving songs that naturally get your feet moving. If you listen to the opening of “The Phoenix” you can almost imagine a herd of horses (or runners) powering along a dirt path. As for “My Songs…,” it starts with clapping hands and keeps on moving during its entire (if short) 3:08 runtime.
I could have easily picked a number of songs from Fall Out Boy for “Training Tunes” and I actually plan to run a 10K in the fall with a mix made up entirely of their songs.
So “light ’em up” and enjoy!

LYRICS:
Oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
Oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.B-B-B-Be careful making wishes in the dark, dark
Can’t be sure when they’ve hit their mark, mark
And besides in the mean, mean time
I’m just dreaming of tearing you apartI’m in the de-details with the devil
So now the world can never get me on my level
I just gotta get you out of the cage
I’m a young lover’s rage
Gonna need a spark to igniteMy songs know what you did in the dark
So light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
I’m on fireSo light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
I’m on fireOh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
In the dark, dark
Oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
In the dark, darkWriters keep writing what they write
Somewhere another pretty vein just died
I’ve got the scars from tomorrow and I wish you could see
That you’re the antidote to everything except for meA constellation of tears on your lashes
Burn everything you love, then burn the ashes
In the end everything collides
My childhood spat back out the monster that you seeMy songs know what you did in the dark
So light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
I’m on fireSo light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
I’m on fireOh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
In the dark, dark
Oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
In the dark, darkMy songs know what you did in the dark
(My songs know what you did in the dark)So light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
I’m on fireSo light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
Light ’em up, up, up
I’m on fireOh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
In the dark, dark
Oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
In the dark, darkOh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, whoa.
