TRAINING TUNES: TWO-FER FRIDAY

Drive on!

Drive on!

Hey Trippers!

Just as radio stations like to do “Two-Fer Tuesdays” and play back-to-back songs from the same group, I’ve decided to throw out a double dose of training tunes… except mine are from different groups, just the same album. Oh, and it’s also Friday.

Enjoy!

SONG: “Real Gone”

GROUP: Sheryl Crow

ALBUM: “Cars”- Soundtrack (Released 2006)

BACKGROUND:

It makes sense that a film about car racing would produce some fast-paced tunes suitable for running mixes. And while this “fish out of water” story about a fancy city racecar stranded in a “podunk” town is typically considered to be the least original of Pixar’s offerings (some have compared it to “Doc Hollywood” with an automobile in place of Michael J. Fox), I found it to be a funny, entertaining and touching tale (I’ve got a serious soft spot for Pixar).

Sheryl Crow’s “Real Gone” starts off the flick with a high-octane race sequence as Lightning McQueen tries to cement his place in racing history by winning the famed Piston Cup.

And while I’ll never secure a Piston Cup of my own (or claim the podium at a race), this song is a firm fixture in my marathon running mix and helps get me going as I pound the pavement.

Ka-Chow!

LYRICS:

I’m American made, But i like , Chevrolet
My momma taught me wrong from right
I was born in the South, sometimes I have a big mouth
When I see something that I don’t like
I gotta say it

We been driving this road for a mighty long time
Payin’ no mind to the signs
Well this neighborhood’s changed, it’s all been rearranged
We left that dream somewhere behind

Slow down, you’re gonna crash
Baby you were screamin’, it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out babe you got your blinders on
Everybody’s lookin’ for a way to get real gone
Real gone, real gone

There’s a new cat in town, he’s got high paid friends
Thinks he’s gonna change history
You think you know him so well
Yeah you think he’s so swell
But he’s just perpetuatin’ prophecy
Come on now

Slow down, you’re gonna crash
Baby, you were screamin’, it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out, you got your blinders on
Everybody’s lookin’ for a way
To get real gone, real gone
Real gone, real gone, uh

Well, you can say what you want but you can’t say it ’round here
‘Cause they’ll catch you and give you a whippin’
Well, I believe I was right when I said you were wrong
You didn’t like the sound of that
Now did ya?

Slow down, you’re gonna crash
Baby, you were screamin’, it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out, you got your blinders on
Everybody’s lookin’ for a way to get real gone

Well, here I come and I’m so not scared
Got my pedal to the metal, got my hands in the air
Well, look out, you take your blinders off
Everybody’s lookin’ for a way to get real gone
Real gone, real gone, ooh!
Real gone, real gone

SONG: “Life is a Highway”

GROUP: Rascal Flatts

ALBUM: “Cars”- Soundtrack (Released 2006)

BACKGROUND:

Written by Tom Cochrane back in 1991 for his album “Mad Mad World,” “Life is a Highway” was already well known before the country/pop hybrid band Rascal Flatts created a cover version for the “Heading West” montage in the film.

The song ended up climbing both the country and pop charts (peaking at #18 on the country charts and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100).

Rascal Flatts has made more than one appearance on my running mixes, with fun songs like “Tonight Tonight,” “Stand,” “No Reins,” and “Summer Nights.”

Give a look!

 LYRICS:

Life’s like a road that you travel on
When there’s one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind

There’s a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won’t haunt you anymore
Where the brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore

We won’t hesitate to break down the garden gate
There’s not much time left today

Life is a highway
I want to ride it all night long
If you’re going my way
Well, I want to drive it all night long

Through all these cities and all these towns
It’s in my blood and it’s all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands

From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver’s lights
Knock me down and back up again
You’re in my blood, I’m not a lonely man

There’s no load I can’t hold
A road so rough, this I know
I’ll be there when the light comes in
Tell ’em we’re survivors

Life is a highway
Well, I want to ride it all night long
If you’re going my way
I want to drive it all night long
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, yeah

Life is a highway
Well, I want to ride it all night long, yeah
If you’re going my way
I want to drive it all night long

There was a distance
Between you and I
A misunderstanding once
But now we look it in the eye, ooh yeah

There ain’t no load that I can’t hold
A road so rough this I know
I’ll be there when the light comes in
Tell ’em we’re survivors

Life is a highway
Well, I want to ride it all night long
If you’re going my way
Well, I want to drive it all night long
Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, yeah

Life is a highway
I want to ride it all night long
If you’re going my way
I want to drive it all night long
Come on, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, yeah

Life is a highway
I want to ride it all night long
(Yeah, I want to drive it all night long)
If you’re going my way
I want to drive it all night long
All night long

Have a great Friday… and Run on!
