That doesn’t seem like such a high number with the big crowds that Boston/NY/Chicago and other big cities pull every year. Interesting to see the percentages worldwide.
It was tough finding a reliable study on the number of runners. The most recent verified one I found was from 2007 and again the figures varied widely (so take it with a grain of salt… or a whole salt lick). Also, remember this is just for the full marathon distance and that many runners do more than one marathon a year. I guess if anything to take from this is that while it’s an elite bunch, there’s still quite a few of us.
